Fifth Lesson for Beginners on Tomorrow Algarve

https://www.facebook.com/TomorrowAlgarve

This is the fifth in our series of Portuguese lessons. Now is the time to put your Portuguese to the test and wish everyone a Happy Christmas – in Portuguese, of course!

It’s Christmas time! (É Natal!)

Let’s learn some of the most common greetings we use during this festive season.

• Merry / Happy Christmas – Feliz Natal / Bom Natal
• Happy New Year – Feliz Ano Novo / Bom Ano Novo
• Happy holidays – Boas festas

If someone wishes you “Feliz/Bom Natal” or “Feliz/ Bom Ano Novo” ou “Boas festas” you can repeat the greeting or just say “Igualmente” (to you too).

Here’s a short list of words related to Christmas:

• Father Christmas – Pai Natal
• Christmas tree – Árvore de Natal
• Baby Jesus – Menino Jesus
• Nativity scene / Crib – Presépio
• Virgin Mary – Virgem Maria / Nossa Senhora
• Saint Joseph – S. José
• Wise men – Reis Magos
• Presents – Prendas / Presentes
• Candles – Velas
• Christmas eve – Noite de Natal / Consoada

And, if you want to buy your Christmas presents (presentes de Natal) in Portugal that could be a nice opportunity to learn some vocabulary about shops.

Here are some words to help you:

Lojas – Shops
Centro Comercial – Shopping Centre
Livraria – Bookstore
Sapataria – Shoe Shop
Loja de roupa – Clothing Store
Loja de brinquedos – Toy Store
Pastelaria – Cake Shop
Papelaria – Stationery
