Lesson nº 11 – Masculine and Feminine numbers???

Now, you’re thinking: is there a masculine and feminine for numbers???
Yes, for the numbers one and two. It works like this:

1 – Um / Uma
2 – Dois / Duas

We have to pay attention to the next word to see if it’s masculine or feminine:
• Um homem. (One man) / Dois homens (two men)
• Uma mulher (One woman) / Duas mulheres (two women)

Then, we do the same thing every time we have the numbers one and two:
• 21 – Vinte e um homens / Vinte e uma mulheres
• 31 – Trinta e um homens / Trinta e uma mulheres
and so on…

We also have to pay attention to the following numbers:

• 200 – Duzentos homens / Duzentas mulheres
• 300 – Trezentos homens / Trezentas mulheres
• 400 – Quatrocentos homens / Quatrocentas mulheres (pronounce the “u” in “Quatrocentos”)
500 – Quinhentos homens / Quinhentas mulheres (don’t pronounce the “u” in “quinhentos”)
• 600 – Seiscentos homens / Seiscentas mulheres
• 700 – Setecentos homens / Setecentas mulheres
• 800 – Oitocentos homens / Oitocentas mulheres
• 900 – Novecentos homens / Novecentas mulheres

And, that’s it!
